Dhorpatan (Baglung): The long-abandoned copper mine in Tamankhola Rural Municipality-6, Baglung, is set for a possible revival, as Bikplus Minerals Pvt. Ltd. begins exploration work following a permit from the Department of Mines and Geology.

The region, rich in copper deposits, once hosted dozens of operating mines until they were shut down in 1981 BS after being brought under government taxation. After decades of dormancy, the Department has now authorized a feasibility study and research in the area until Asoj 14, 2084 BS.

According to Balram Karki, a geologist with Bikplus Minerals, copper traces have been identified in Narjakhani, and a three-phase research plan has been initiated to assess mining viability. “We are currently in the first stage, conducting a geophysical survey,” said Karki. “If results are promising, we’ll move on to test drilling and then final drilling. If all stages yield positive outcomes, excavation will follow.”

Karki estimates the excavation project may require an investment of Rs. 20 to 22 billion, depending on the scale and outcome of the study. A technical team is currently stationed on-site to conduct the survey.

Remnants of the historic copper mining era—tunnels and mine structures—are still visible across Narjakhani, Bhitarban, and Patlegaun. The renewed study has sparked optimism among locals, many of whom hope for economic upliftment through job creation and infrastructure development.

Chitra Chhantyal, Ward Chairman of Tamankhola-6, expressed hope that the revival of the ancestral mine would improve the livelihood of villagers. Similarly, Tamankhola Rural Municipality Chairman Joklal Budhamagar confirmed that the study has been progressing positively after persistent efforts to reinitiate mining activity.

The success of this initiative could mark a significant step in revitalizing Nepal’s dormant mineral resources and boosting the local economy.
